Bicol - The Land and Pride of the Bicolanos

 

Bicol is one of the 17 regions of the Philippines, it is composed of six provinces, which showcases the region's rich culture and natural beauty. The region is speckled with spectacular tourist destinations from blissful white-sand beaches, limestone cliffs, stunning caves and waterfalls as well as historical sites. Tourists can also explore the many marine sanctuaries in the region, like the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction, where you can swim with whale sharks in their natural habitat.

 

The Mayon Volcano, which is the world's most perfect volcanic cone and the most active volcano in Philippines, is what most Filipinos and travelers usually associate Bicol with. Apart from Mayon, Bicol is also known for its distinctive cuisine, largely based on chillies and coconut cream. Bicol express & Laing are two of its most famous dishes. Other than these, pili nuts are also a local specialty and a favourite snack among Bicolanos. It is recognised as a super food and some claim it as the healthiest nuts in the world although traditionally, they are usually salted or sugar-coated.

The Bicolano people are known for a strong sense of family and community, as well as a strong devotion to religion as well as local traditions and customs. Throughout the year, several festivals that involve parades, colorful costumes, lively music, and dances are held in the region to celebrate the local culture.

Abaca, dubbed as the fiber of the future by UN and recognised as the strongest among all natural fibres, is widely grown in the Bicol region. In fact, Bicol is the number one supplier of Abaca in the Philippines, which supplies almost 90% of Abaca worldwide. Its abundance in the region, along with other natural fibres available locally, has contributed to its rich weaving tradition, turning its fibres into various textiles and using them to make clothing, bags, footwear and several other products.
